Holotropic Breathwork™ operates under the principle within each of us we have our own inner wisdom it uses the remarkable transformative potential of non-ordinary states of consciousness for self-exploration, personal transformation, spiritual awareness, and healing. Using sustained deep breathing and evocative music to direct attention away from the everyday mind and into the deep psyche beyond the “skin encapsulated ego”. Each experience is unique and varied depending on the intelligence of the individuals own inner healing guidance.
Who developed Holotropic Breathwork, Dr. Stanislav Grof.?
Stanislav Grof, M.D., is a psychiatrist with over sixty years of experience in the research of non-ordinary states of consciousness and one of the founders and chief theoreticians of transpersonal psychology.
Dr. Grof to me is a man who has inspired me to remember that I have great wisdom within myself. He is man who directed me to look within for all the answers. He is a man who didn't judge my process, a man who truly trusted I have my own inner healer. He is a man who empowered me to trust me. I am forever grateful.

Non-ordinary states have a characteristic sensory vividness and transcendent quality. The usual perception of boundaries between space and time, matter and energy, parts and the whole may blur. A holotropic breathwork session can bring into consciousness any emotions, sensations or thoughts that may be unfinished byproducts of events from our personal life history or our birth experience. Breathwork provides the opportunity for unproductive patterns and emotions frozen with past events to surface and transform into an experience of release.

Dr. Stanislav Grof wrote In his book, Psychology of the Future, "in holotropic states, we can transcend the narrow boundaries of the body ego and reclaim our full identity." Holotropic Breathwork operates under the principle that we are our own best healers, in that each of us has an inner healing mechanism. Just as our physical body will instinctually move to heal itself when injured the same is true with our psyche, given the opportunity. Holotropic Breathwork touches the deepest levels of the subconscious, helping one to access experiences which go beyond everyday understanding, such as traumatic memories, archetypes, birth experiences and, some believe, even karmic patterns. An individual's own psyche is the director of the holotropic experience.
The Process of Holotropic Breathwork™
Holotropic Breathwork is done in pairs one participant is the "breather" and one participant is the "sitter" each takes turns breathing and sitting for each other. The sitter's role is simply to be available to assist the breather if asked. (example water, tissues, etc..) Sitting for someone having a holotropic experience can be a deeply moving, learning experience. Each breathing session lasts approximately 2 hours in length. Breathe...I know the Elephant just entered the room ...trust me it will be one of the fastest 2 hours of your life. After your breathing session, you will have an opportunity to create a non-verbal expression of the experience.
The Holotropic process itself uses very simple means: it combines accelerated breathing with evocative music in a sacred setting. With the eyes closed and lying on a mat, each person uses his or her own breath to enter an expanded state of consciousness. This expanded state activates the natural inner healing process of the individual's psyche, bringing you to a particular set of internal experiences. With the inner healing intelligence guiding the process, the quality and content brought forth is unique to each person and for that particular time and place. Because the Inner Healer knows all and knows what each individual is ready to work with you do not need to prepare any intentions in advance. The only intention that needs to be set is the intention to let go, surrender and trust the inner healer and the process. While recurring themes are common, no two sessions are ever alike.
Because this workshop can promote strong physical and emotional release, it is not advised for persons with a history of cardiovascular disease, including angina or heart attack, high blood pressure, glaucoma, retinal detachment, osteoporosis, significant recent physical injuries or recent surgery.
This workshop is not advised for persons with severe mental illness or seizure disorders or for persons using major medications. Pregnant women are advised against taking this workshop. Persons with asthma should bring their inhaler and consult with the facilitators. Please note having any of the listed contraindications does not necessarily preclude your participation.
