LOST CITY, FOUND

Machu Picchu is undeniably a must-visit destination for all travelers. Nestled on a high ridge above the Sacred Valley it endures as an extraordinary testament to the Inca civilization. Often called the "Lost City of the Incas," it's worth noting that the Incas themselves always knew of its whereabouts. Fortunately, their descendants have graciously opened its doors to the world, allowing us to explore, learn, and immerse ourselves in the profound tranquility that envelops this sacred site. If you feel lost, this is an incredible opportunity to discover and reconnect to the light within.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, all travelers must have emergency medical insurance that covers emergency evacuation and repatriation up to at least $200,000. Your CEO will be checking this when you arrive.  Please bring a copy of your travel insurance with you. We also strongly recommend purchasing an all-inclusive plan that covers cancellation/interruption insurance.

To take advantage of the full benefits of travel insurance, it is essential to get travel insurance within 10-14 days (depending on the company) of the first payment made for your trip.  You may lose some extra benefits if you do not do this.

For your convenience, below are options for you to review.

Are any inoculations required?

Please consult with your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information and recommendations. To see recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

HEALTH

You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information well before departure.  Let your doctor know that your Adventure travels to high altitudes. This is medically defined as anything over 8,000 feet (2,440 meters). Most people can travel to 8,000 feet with minimal effects. However, everyone reacts to altitude differently, and altitude sickness can affect some people irrespective of fitness and age. Please consult your physician for details on how to prepare best and what to do in the unlikely event you are affected on your Adventure.

While traveling, we recommend that you carry a First Aid kit, hand sanitizers / antibacterial wipes, and any personal medical requirements. Please be aware that we are often in remote areas and away from medical facilities, and for legal reasons, our leaders are prohibited from administering any drug, including headache tablets, antibiotics, etc. G Adventures reserves the right to exclude any traveler from all or part of a trip without refund if, in the reasonable opinion of our CEO, they cannot complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group.

In an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, entry requirements and restrictions dictated by foreign governments can change frequently and irrespective of your intended date of travel. These requirements and restrictions may depend on different factors,  such as your country of residence, passport nationality, destination, and transit points, as well as previous travel history. Given these considerations, it is the traveler’s responsibility to research and understand the latest travel and health requirements and restrictions.

What are the passport and visa requirements?

All countries require a valid passport (with a minimum of 6 months validity). Contact your local embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date visa requirements. It is your own responsibility to have the correct travel documentation. Visa requirements for your trip will vary depending on where you are from and where you are going. While we provide the following information in good faith, it is vital that you check the information yourself and understand that you are fully responsible for your own visa requirements.

Visas - U.S. citizens traveling to Peru do not need a visa if their stay is under 183 days.  This information can change at any time.  You are responsible for verifying Visa requirements.

How many people are expected on this retreat?

This will be a small group of only 12-14 people.

What if I don't know anyone going on the Retreat?

A phenomenal group of like-minded people will surround you. A close-knit community will quickly develop and last beyond our time together!

I didn't see any mention of yoga.

This is a National Geographic Journey. They carefully curate our schedule with many great adventures. When the time feels right, we will do yoga or meditation. My vision is that yoga will be somewhere out in nature where we can take in the beauty of this magical land. Imagine practicing yoga amidst stunning landscapes, feeling the energy of the mountains as you find your inner balance.

Will there be wifi available?

In some areas, Wi-Fi may be accessible, while in others, the connection might not be as reliable. However, I encourage you to contemplate whether you truly need a constant connection to the digital world during your journey. Sometimes, embracing the opportunity to unplug and immerse yourself fully in the present moment can lead to a more profound and spiritual experience. Nature and travel offer a chance to connect with the world on a different level, free from the distractions of the online realm. So, perhaps the better question is not about the availability of Wi-Fi, but whether you're open to disconnecting and allowing yourself to be fully present and engaged in the journey itself."

Are gratuities included?

No, more details are below under spending money.

What to bring

What to Pack:

Most people automatically assume that the weather is hot in South America, but because of the higher altitude in the Andes, the temperature can feel quite cool, especially at night. April is the beginning of the dry season; it has been known to get around eight days of rain throughout the month. It is considered the best time to travel to Peru as there are few crowds. But given the country’s topography, you must be prepared to find different weather conditions as you travel from one region to another.

  • Layered clothing, including lightweight and moisture-wicking materials, is essential to adapt to changing weather conditions.

  • Sturdy and comfortable shoes or hiking boots are necessary for exploring the site and hiking in the surrounding areas.

  • Remember sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the strong sun at high altitudes.

  • Pack a waterproof jacket or poncho, just in case.

  • Daypack

  • Daypack / Rain Cover: if you are not bringing a poncho

  • Refillable water bottle

  • First-aid Kit

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Outlet adapter and, depending on what you bring, maybe an adapter/converter.

Documents To Pack:

  • Passport / With photocopies

  • Travel Insurance / CEO will be checking them on arrival

  • Vouchers and pre-departure information / we will explain later

Do I need to bring my yoga mat?

Yes, however, I am thinking more of a yoga towel.  Something you can easily carry for that moment of inspiration. We will talk in more detail as we get closer to the date.

Laundry
Some of our hotels offer laundry facilities for a charge. There will be times when you may want to or have to do your own laundry, so we suggest you bring non-polluting/biodegradable soap.

Spending Money
Every traveler is different, and therefore, spending money requirements will vary. Please consider your own spending habits when it comes to allowing for drinks, shopping, and tipping. Please also remember the following specific recommendations when planning your trip.

MONEY EXCHANGE/ CREDIT CARD

  • The currency in Peru is the Nuevo Sol (PEN).

  • Credit cards and debit cards are very useful for cash advances. Visa cards are the most widely accepted cards. While ATMs are widely available, there are no guarantees that your credit or debit cards will actually work in Latin America. Check with your bank.

  • You should be aware that to purchase products or services on a credit card, a fee of 5%-10% usually applies. Do not rely on credit or debit cards as your only source of money; a combination of US dollar cash and cards is best.

  • Always take more rather than less, as you don't want to spoil the trip by constantly feeling short of funds.

  • We do not recommend bringing traveler's cheques as they are very difficult to change in the country.

INSIDER TIP: Please be advised that slightly torn notes, notes that have been heavily marked, or notes that are faded, may be difficult to exchange. It is best to bring notes in fairly good condition, in denominations lower than $100(or equivalent).

As currency exchange rates can fluctuate often, we ask that you refer to the following website for daily exchange rates: www.xe.com

EMERGENCY FUND
Please also ensure you have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an 'emergency' fund to be used when circumstances outside our control (ex., a natural disaster) require a change to our planned route. This is a rare occurrence!

TIPPING
It is customary in Latin America to tip service providers, such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service. Tipping is an expected - though not compulsory - component of your tour program and an expression of satisfaction with the persons who have assisted you on your tour. Although it may not be customary to you, it is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels. There are several times during the trip when there is an opportunity to tip the local guides or drivers we use.

Recommendations for tipping

  • Drivers and local guides would range from $5-10 USD per day depending on the quality and length of the service; ask your CEO for specific recommendations based on the circumstances and culture.

  • Also, at the end of each trip, if you felt your G Adventures CEO did an outstanding job, tipping is appreciated. The amount is entirely a personal preference; however, as a guideline, $20-25 USD per person per week can be used.
