Healing Power of Sound Therapy- Medicine of the Future

Sound will be the medicine of the future. - Edgar Cayce

We already know music can affect our moods; when you are feeling a little down an infectious pop tune can instantly life your spirits.

Let’s take a closer look at the healing powers of sound. In 2003, a study conducted by the University of Rochester Medical Center found that using music therapy for bone marrow transplant patients resulted in less reported instances of nausea, pain, and a faster recovery time In 2008, the journal, Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, published a review of 20 studies of brain-wave entrainment and patient outcomes. The studies found that brain-wave entertainment is an effective tool in treating cognitive functioning deficits, stress, pain, headaches, and premenstrual syndrome. Dr. James Gimzewski, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at UCLA, using an atomic force microscope has revealed that every cell in our bodies has a unique sonic signature and ‘sings’ together with its neighboring cells. Your cells are like a nano chorus; each one ‘singing’ together.

The benefits of sound healing are becoming more known thanks to expanding scientific research, and the therapeutic practice is continuing to gain popularity. The growing body of research shows healing at cellular and psychological levels. While the data may be new, this healing art has been practiced for centuries.

Today, we may not fully understand the magical power of sound. However, the healing power of sound is nothing new to Sufi, Hindu, Native American, Aboriginal, Egyptian, and the Babylonian cultures who have historically used the sound vibrations as a healing modality. One of the most popular introductions to sound healing is a Sacred Healing Sound Bath. Experiencing a Sound Bath can take you to another place. Within a sound bath you may experience many different ancient sound instruments.

The drum is the most ancient instrument in the world, dating back tens of thousands of years. More than any other instrument, the drum can take you back into tribe times. Drums have been used in healing work since before recorded time.

The gong is another wonderful instrument for sound therapy. While the gong is played the sweeping reverberation serves to sweep out darkness. The sound of the gong is the sound of the universe, and by listening to it you are tuning in to the sounds of the cosmos. Singing bowls are also an incredible instrument for sound, and they can be made from a variety of materials, each with their own healing qualities. Crystal singing bowls are composed almost entirely of quartz crystals. Quartz has the ability to transform, store, and amplify energy, and is used in a variety of everyday items including watches, microphones, laser tools and computers. The human body is crystalline in nature and the sound of the bowls has a powerful effect on all of our bodily systems. Tibetan singing bowls are considered a symbol of “the unknowable,” and their vibrations have been described by the Tibetan Bodhisattva Gwalwa Karmapa as emitting the “sound of the universe manifesting.” The pure sonic waves that ring from the bowls are said to have the ability to awaken every cell within the body.

Your body is 50- 60% water which means every healing vibration ripples through you. Sound baths relax our nervous system and activate right brain activity (creative, intuitive side). Our left brain (logical side) relaxes, resulting in less mind chatter. During our waking state, the normal frequency of our brain waves is that of Beta. During the sound bath the brain-waves move into the deeper Alpha and Theta brain-waves frequencies, where profoundly deep healing can occur. Some people might enter the Delta brain-wave state, which is the healing deep sleep frequency.

Life can be very busy and stressful; your body can begin to feel overloaded and imbalanced. This strain can cause a number of physical and mental ailments. Don’t wait until it is to late take care of yourself. Sound Baths are an easy, simple way to rejuvenate and envelope your mind, body and spirit in therapeutic sounds.
